Have just enjoyed a super short break in this glorious city. It was our first visit and we were definitely not disappointed – it lived up to expectations wonderfully. The buildings are breath-taking. Such splendour, my pictures do not do them justice. We did all of the tourist things – we went to the two main palaces, the Hofburg Palace where I learned the story of Sisi, Empress Elisabeth of Austria.
I am ashamed to say that my knowledge of history did not stretch to this sad lady. Her story is amazing. A 20 inch waist and ankle length hair, she was a real beauty of the time.
We then went on to the summer residence, Schonbrunn Palace with its magnificent gardens.
Out of the two, I preferred the Hofburg, I loved Sisi’s rooms.
The horse and carriage ride around Vienna was a must do and we did. Why was I surprised by how bumpy a carriage is over cobbles? It’s common sense, but I was ‘Wow, it’s bumpy!” I felt a real idiot.
The Kunsthistorisches Museum – huge and the coffee shop there is the most elegant I’ve ever been to. Splendid. We spent over two hours just looking at the paintings before we even went to the other collections; the Egyptian collection was incredible. Loved the whole place.
It’s a pity that our stay was so short, there were so many places that we never had a chance to visit.
Highlight – cakes. I ate so many cakes and they were all so delicious.
Vienna is a place I need to go back to, I’m getting withdrawal symptoms so I’m heading into the kitchen to make a cake.
