Well, son went back to university yesterday. How quickly the Christmas holiday went! The house is quiet and a lot tidier. This is his third year at university and I’ve never really got used to the empty house. My husband and I rattle around and we spend a lot of our time talking about what our son may be doing in Hull. Phone calls are the funniest times as we both fight for the phone – ‘I’ll have a word with him now’ is a constant chorus.

Tell me – do children ever really leave home? I don’t think they do. They might leave physically, but in every nook and cranny there is always a fingerprint and a memory.
